Great mix of traditional and modern, comfortable futons, super nice host with great recommendations and advice, surprising and delicious breakfast. Rental bikes and public transport available.
Not close to major Kyoto sights, may be inconvenient for hurried travelers. Wooden house, so noise can be easily heard.

I had a really great time staying at Guesthouse Kobako. The owner goes above and beyond to make sure guests have a comfortable stay. The refurbished ryokan is lovely and clean, with access to a communal kitchen. The owner is generous and eager to teach guests about Japanese living. The location is close to supermarkets and important attractions. The staff is friendly and the bed in the dorm room was very comfortable. The attention to detail in the renovated traditional Japanese house is outstanding.

Homely and friendly atmosphere, helpful staff with great neighborhood tips. Convenient access to bicycles for easy exploring. Quiet location away from tourist crowds.
Difficult to find on the first day due to its location in a small alleyway. Limited privacy in the shared bathrooms, with the window facing the smoking area.
